Town in the Achterhoek region, first mentioned in the 9th century. Much of the historic centre was destroyed during and after the Second World War.

The reformed Grote- of St. Catharinakerk
is a big hall-church in Gothic style. It largely dates from the 15th
and 16th centuries but much of had to be rebuilt after World War Two,
having been badly damaged by bombs in 1945

Another Gothic building is the Evangelical Lutheran and Mennonite church. It was built in the late-15th century as the chapel of a hospital.

The O.L. Vrouwe ten Hemelopneming is Doetinchem's main catholic church. It's a big cruciform basilica in Traditionalist style, built in 1933-1934 and designed by H.W. Valk.
