Berkel-Enschot (NB)

From the 12th century Berkel and Enschot had been two villages. After World War Two they became one village. In 1996 the village became part of the municipality of Tilburg.

The old tower in Berkel remains of a medieval church, the St. Michaël. On each side of the tower a trave of a side-aisle is left. Although the tower dates from the early-15th century, when Gothicism was the common style for churches, it is still in Romanesque style. The rest of the church was demolished in 1839.

The neo-Gothic St. Cecilia of Berkel dates from 1898-1899 and was designed by C. Franssen. It replaced a hidden church which was built in 1672.

In Enschot a late-medieval chapel was used as a church. Architect H.J. van Tulder added a tower to this chapel in 1857. In 1910 the chapel was replaced by this new St. Willibrordus, designed by J. Stuyt. The tower was retained but was covered by a new layer of bricks.

The trappist monastery Onze Lieve Vrouw van Koningshoeven is located south of the village, near Tilburg. This big complex in neo-Gothic style dates from 1891-1894 and was designed by A.G. de Beer.
