Rothem (L): Heilig Hart van Jezus (J. Wielders, 1928-1929)

The church of Rothem was designed by J. Wielders in an Expressionist style that is closely related to that of the Amsterdam School. The church was built out of brick around a concrete skeleton. It is three-aisles wide and has a wide central aisle illuminated by large pointed windows, one of which in the facade, the other six in pointed gables at the sides. The side-aisles are narrow and low and have small rectangular windows. In the southern front corner is a square tower with two portals. On the western and southern sides of the tower are chapels which end in a curve. At its east end the church has a narrower and slightly higher choir, flanked by transept-arms and closed with a lower, polygonal apse.
The original higher roof of the tower was destroyed by fire in 1969 and was later replaced by the current one.
