Amersfoort (U)

Amersfoort is the second largest city in the Utrecht province. In 2009 it celebrated its 750th birthday. Its old center has many historic buildings. Outside the center are many more churches for many different denominations. Although Amersfoort is in a mostly protestant part of the country, it has a sizeable catholic minority.

Amersfoort is de op een na grootste stad van de provincie Utrecht. In 2009 vierde de stad zijn 750-jarig bestaan. Het oude centrum telt een groot aantal historische gebouwen. Ook buiten het centrum staan vele kerken van talloze verschillende kerkgenootschappen. Hoewel Amersfoort is gelegen in een overwegend protestants deel van het land, kent de stad een aanzienlijke katholieke minderheid.

 

  

Amersfoort biggest church is this St. Joriskerk (church of St. George), a Gothic hall-church from the 14th century which was built on the location of a Romanesque predecessor, of which the tower was incorporated. It became a protestant church early during the Reformation.

De grootste kerk van Amersfoort is de St. Joriskerk, een gotische hallenkerk uit de 14e eeuw die werd gebouwd op de locatie van een romaanse voorganger waarvan de toren werd behouden. Na de Reformatie werd zij een protestantse kerk.

The Onze Lieve Vrouwetoren is one of the most important Gothic towers in the country. The church it belonged to, the Onze Lieve Vrouwekerk, was the city's largest church for centuries, until in 1787 it was destroyed by a gunpowder explosion. The tower closely resembles the tower of Utrecht's cathedral.

De Onze Lieve Vrouwentoren is een van de belangrijkste gotische torens van het land. De bijbehorende Onze Lieve Vrouwekerk was eeuwenlang de grootste kerk van de stad, totdat zij in 1787 werd vernietigd door een buskruitexplosie. De toren lijkt sterk op die van de Dom van Utrecht.

The oldest of several medieval chapels in the city is the St. Aegtenkapel (chapel of St. Agatha), built in 1408-1410 as part of an otherwise vanished convent.

De oudste van een aantal behouden middeleeuwse kapellen in de stad is de St. Aegtenkapel, gebouwd in 1408-1410 als onderdeel van een verder verdwenen vrouwenklooster.

The Gasthuiskapel is the early 16th-century chapel of a hospital that was founded here in the late 14th century, the St. Pietersgasthuis (St. Peter's hospital).

De Gasthuiskapel is de vroeg-16e-eeuwse kapel van een gasthuis dat hier in de late 14de eeuw werd  gesticht, het St. Pietersgasthuis.

The St. Rochus chapel is a small Gothic building from the early 16th century. It's part of the court of almshouses De Armen de Poth.

De St. Rochuskapel is een klein gotisch gebouw uit het begin van de 16e eeuw. Het is onderdeel van het hofje De Armen de Poth.

The synagogue is a building from 1727, but it owes much of its current looks to a restoration in 1842-1843.

The Roman Catholic St. Franciskus Xavierius is an early Neo-Classical church designed by F. Wittenberg and built in 1816-1817 in replacement of a clandestine church which previously stood on this location.

De rooms-katholieke St. Franciskus Xavierius is een vroeg neoclassicistische kerk, ontworpen door F. Wittenberg en gebouwd in 1816-1817 ter vervanging van een schuilkerk die eerder op deze plek stond.

The O.L. Vrouw ten Hemelopneming is a former Roman Catholic church in Neo-Classical style, which was built in 1820 as a replacement for a nearby hidden church. The building housed a museum until it was destroyed by fire in 2007. The church was rebuilt after the fire.

De O.L. Vrouw ten Hemelopneming is een voormalige rooms-katholieke kerk in neoclassicistische stijl die in 1820 werd gebouwd ter vervanging van een nabijgelegen schuilkerk. Tot 2007, toen het door brand werd verwoest, herbergde het gebouw een museum. Na de brand is de kerk herbouwd.

The Evangelical-Lutheran church is another Neo-Classical building. It was designed by B. Ruitenberg and built in 1837.

De Evangelisch-Lutherse kerk is eveneens een neoclassicistische gebouw. Het werd ontworpen door B. Ruitenberg en gebouwd in 1837.

The Remonstrant church was designed in Eclectic style by W.H. Kam and built in 1883. Today it's a house.

De Remonstrantse kerk is ontworpen in eclectische stijl door W.H. Kam en dateert uit 1883. Tegenwoordig is het een woonhuis.

The convent of the Zusters van Onze Lieve Vrouw van Amersfoort is a big complex which was mostly designed by H. Kroes and built in c. 1900. However, the Neo-Gothic church, built in 1889, was designed by C.L.M. Robbers and enlarged by B.J. Koldewey in 1934-1935.

Het klooster van de Zusters van Onze Lieve Vrouw van Amersfoort is een groot complex dat grotendeels ontworpen werd door H. Kroes en gebouwd rond 1900. De neogotische kerk uit 1889 werd echter ontworpen door C.L.M. Robbers en uitgebreid door B.J. Koldewey in 1934-1935.

The catholic St. Henricus was built in 1907-1908 as a two-aisled church in Neo-Gothic style, designed by local architect H. Kroes. In 1933-1934 it was drastically rebuilt; the two aisles became one, and side-aisles and the current front with tower were added, all designed by Th.J. van Elsberg.

De katholieke St. Henricus werd in 1907-1908 gebouwd als een tweebeukige kerk in neogotische stijl, ontworpen door de plaatselijke architect H. Kroes. In 1933-1934 werd de kerk radicaal verbouwd; de twee beuken werden tot een samengevoegd, en er werden zijbeuken en het huidige front met toren toegevoegd, alles naar ontwerp van Th.J. van Elsberg.

The Van Diestkapel is a small church in a more or less Neo-Gothic style, built in 1912 as a Catholic Apostolic Church.

The Mennonite church dates from 1913 and was replaced in 1964 by a modern church behind it. Its current destination is unknown.

De Doopsgezinde kerk dateert uit 1913 en werd in 1964 vervangen door een moderne kerk er achter. De huidige bestemming van de kerk is onbekend.

The former Gereformeerde kerk was built in 1914 on the site of a predecessor which itself was built on the spot of an old chapel in 1888. The church was built in an eclectic style with Neo-Gothic elements and was designed by W. Salomons. In 1994 the building became a restaurant.

De voormalige Gereformeerde kerk werd gebouwd in 1914 op de locatie van een voorganger die in 1888 op de plaats van een oude kapel was gebouwd. De kerk is gebouwd in een eclectische stijl met neogotische elementen en werd ontworpen door W. Salomons. In 1994 werd het gebouw een reastaurant.

The St. Ansfridus is a Neo-Gothic cruciform basilica, designed by W. te Riele and built in 1914-1916.

De St. Ansfridus is een neogotische kruisbasiliek, ontworpen door W. te Riele en gebouwd in 1914-1916.

St. Louis was a large catholic boarding school for boys, with at its center a chapel. The complex was designed by L. Faber and built in c. 1914, when the school moved from Roermond to the woods of Amersfoort. The boarding school closed in 1975. Today, the complex is a Calvinist school.

St. Louis as een groot katholiek jongensinternaat met centraal in het complex een kapel. Het complex werd ontworpen door L. Faber en werd gebouwd rond 1914, toen de school verhuisde van Roermond naar de bossen bij Amersfoort. Het internaat werd in 1975 gesloten, het complex dient nu als een school op reformatorische grondslag.

The St. Joseph of Hooglanderveen, a former village now part of Amersfoort, is a pseudo-basilica in neo-Gothic style, designed by W. te Riele and built in 1917-1918.

De St. Joseph van Hooglanderveen, een voormalig dorp dat nu deel uitmaakt van Amersfoort, is een pseudobasiliek in neogotische stijl, ontworpen door W. te Riele en gebouwd in 1917-1918.

The former Christelijke Gereformeerde Kerk was built in 1917 and is a small aisless building in an unspecifc traditional style. In 1965 it was closed and became a Catholic Apostolic Church.

De voormalige Christelijke Gereformeerde Kerk werd gebouwd in 1917 en is een kleine zaalkerk in een niet-specifieke traditionele stijl. In 1965 werd de kerk gesloten en werd daarna een Katholiek Apostolische Kerk.

The reformed Nieuwe Kerk is an aisleless church in moderate Expressionist style, designed by G. van Hoogevest and built in 1924 as the second reformed church in the city.

De hervormde Nieuwe Kerk is een zaalkerk in gematigde epressionistische stijl, ontworpen door G.van Hoogevest en gebouwd in 1924 als de tweede hervomde kerk in de stad.

The Old-Catholic H. Georgius from 1927 was designed by W. van Gent in an Expressionist style.

Also from 1927 and in a similar style is the Gereformeerde Appelkerk, designed by G. van Hoogevest.

Another design by G. van Hoogevest is the reformed Emmakerk, a cruciform church in moderate Expressionist style, built in 1929. It's  nowadays  named Emmaüskerk.

Een ander ontwerp van G. van Hoogevest is de hervormde Emmakerk, een kruiskerk in zakelijk-expressionistische stijl, gebouwd in 1929. Tegenwoordig heet de kerk Emmaüskerk.

The convent and school complex O.L. Vrouwe ter Eem was designed by B.J. Koldewey and W.C.A. Kroes and built in 1931-1933, although the chapel in Traditionalist Delft School style is usually attributed to Koldewey alone.

Het vrouwenklooster en scholencomplex O.L. Vrouwe ter Eem werd ontworpen door  B.J. Koldewey en H. Kroes en gebouwd in 1931-1933, hoewel de kapel in traditionalistische Delftse School-stijl doorgaans alleen aan Koldewey wordt toegeschreven.

The complex of the originally reformed psychiatric hospital Zon en Schild was built in the years 1928 until 1940. Much of it was designed by G. van Hoogevest, including the chapel in Traditionalist style, which dates from 1932.

Het complex van psychiatrisch ziekenhuis Zon en Schild werd gebouwd in de jaren 1928 tot 1940. Grote delen ervan zijn ontworpen door G. van Hoogevest waaronder de uit 1932 stammende kapel in traditionalistische stijl.

The Gereformeerde Westerkerk was designed in a combination of moderate Expressionism and Traditionalism by B.W. Plooij and built in 1939-1940.

De Gereformeerde Westerkerk werd ontworpen in een combinatie van zakelijk-expressionisme en traditionalisme door B.W. Plooij en gebouwd in 1939-1940.

The Gereformeerde Leusderkerk was designed in simple Traditionalist by B.W. Plooij and built as a temporary church in 1949 with an intended life expectancy of 15 to 20 years. At the front it originally had a short and wide tower. The building currently serves as the community center of the Fonteinkerk.

De Gereformeerde Leusderkerk werd ontworpen in eenvoudige traditionalistische stijl door B.W. Plooij en is in 1949 gebouwd als een noodkerk met een geplande levensduur van 15 tot 20 jaar. Aan de voorkant bevond zich oorspronkelijk een korte, brede toren. Het gebouw dient tegenwoordig als bijgebouw van de Fonteinkerk.

The reformed Bergkerk was built in 1952 as the successor of a chapel founded by liberal protestants. The church was designed in a modern Traditionalist style by  D. Zuiderhoek

De hervormde Bergkerk werd in 1952 gebouwd als opvolger van een vrijzinnige protestantse kapel. De kerk werd door D. Zuiderhoek ontworpen in een moderne traditionalistische stijl.

The Constantianum was built in 1952-1954 as a Crosier monastery named St. Helena, with a boarding school. The complex with its remarkable Traditionalist church was designed by J.C.A. Schijvens and nowadays serves as a hotel school.

Het Constantianum werd gebouwd in 1952-1954 as een Kruisherenklooster, genaamd St. Helena, met een internaat. Het complex met de opmerkelijke traditionalistische kerk werd ontworpen door J.C.A. Schjvens en dient tegenwoordig als hotelschool.

The Gereformeerde Rehobothkerk is one of B.W. Plooij's more modest designs, a aisless church in simple Traditionalist style. It was built in 1953 and became an evangelist church in 1998 and was renamed Rafaël.

De Gereformeerde Rehobothkerk is een van de meer eenvoudige werken van B.W. Plooij, een zaalkerk in simpele traditionalistische stijl. Het gebouw stamt uit 1953 en is sinds 1998 een evangelistische kerk met de naam Rafaël.

The chapel of the former Old-Catholic seminary is now a Russian Orthodox church. The seminary was designed in Traditionalist style by H.A. and J.G. Pothoven and built in 1954-1957.

De kapel van het Oud-Katholiek seminarie is nu een Russisch-Orthodoxe kerk. Het seminarie werd ontworpen in traditionalistische stijl door H.A. en J.G. Pothoven en werd gebouwd in 1954-1957.

The liberal reformed Johanneskerk is one of few modern churches in the historic center. The church in Functionalist style was designed by S. van Woerden and H.J. Schneider and built in 1960.

De vrijzinnig-hervormde Johanneskerk is een van een handjevol moderne kerken in het historische centrum. De kerk in functionalistische stijl werd ontworpen door S. van Woerden and H.J. Schneider en dateert uit 1960.

One of the more interesting modern churches is the Fonteinkerk, designed by D. Zuiderhoek and built in 1965-1966 as the successor of the Leusderkerk.
