Culemborg (G)

Town in the west of the Betuwe region, located near the borders with the provinces Utrecht and South Holland. Culemborg originated in the Middle Ages on the banks of the rivers Lek and Meer. The settlement was first mentioned in 1281 and was granted city rights in 1318. From 1555 until 1795 Culemborg was an independent county. Despite the Reformation, until well into the 20th century the majority of the population of the town was Catholic.
