Velsen municipality (NH)

Municipality in the south-western part of the province, located just north of Haarlem. Administrative center is the town of Ijmuiden. The other locations are the villages Driehuis, Santpoort-Noord, Santpoort-Zuid, Velsen-Noord, Velsen-Zuid, Spaarndammerpolder and Velserbroek.

 
Ijmuiden

 

 

 

 

Since 1919 this building has been a theatre named Thalia, but this is in fact the former Old-Catholic church built in 1890. Already in 1907 it was replaced by the current church elsewhere in the town. Before becoming a theatre the facade was drastically modified.

The reformed Nieuwe Kerk ('new church') was built in 1910-1911 and was designed by English architect W.A. Forsyth and his Dutch colleague G. Meppelink. The neo-Gothic design was inspired by Anglican churches in England.

The Goede Herderkerk (good sheperd church) is a reformed church in moderate Expressionist style, designed by F.B. Jantzen and built in 1934-1935.

The Gereformeerde Ichtuskerk was designed by S.J. Meegdes and A. ten Broeke and was built in 1938-1939.

In Ijmuiden, the Old-Catholic parish is larger than the Roman Catholic one. The Old-Catholic St. Engelmundus was designed by D. Copper and built in 1907 in an architectural style closely related to Rationalism.

Velsen-Noord


 

 

The Gereformeerde kerk was built in Expressionist style in 1924. It was designed by h. van Emmerik. It was closed in 1987 and is nowadays a community center.

At the time the St. Joseph was built, Velsen-Noord was still named Wijkeroog. The church was designed in neo-Romanesque style by J. Stuyt and built in 1908.

Velsen-Zuid

 

 

 

 

The reformed church or Engelmunduskerk is one of the oldest churches in the region. It dates from the 12th century and is mostly Romanesque.

Driehuis

 

 

 

The St. Engelmundus of Driehuis is a neo-Gothic cruciform basilica, designed by A.A.M. Bruning and built in 1893.
