Montfoort municipality / Gemeente Montfoort (U)

Montfoort  is a town and a municipality in the west of the Utrecht province.The eponymous town  grew out of a settlement around a castle, a stronghold to protect Utrecht against invasions by Holland, and received town rights in 1329. The municipality also comprises the village of Linschoten, which is about as old as Montfoort, as well as a few villages without any churches. This page shows all the significant churches in the municipality.

Montfoort is een stad en een gemeente in het westen van de provincie Utrecht. De gelijknamige stad groeide uit een nederzetting rond een kasteel, een bolwerk ter bescherming van Utrecht tegen invallen door Holland, en kreeg stadsrechten in 1329. De gemeente omvat ook het dorp Linschoten, dat ongeveer zo oud is als Montfoort, evenals enkele dorpen zonder kerken. Deze pagina toont alle relevante kerken in de gemeente.

The reformed Grote of St. Janskerk is a big cruciform pseudo-basilica in late-Gothic style. It was built in the second half of the 15th century and replaced an aisleless church from the 14th century.

De hervormde Grote of St. Janskerk is een grote kruisvormige pseudobasiliek in laat-gotische stijl. De kerk werd gebouwd in de tweede helft van de 15e eeuw en verving een eenbeukige kerk uit de 14e eeuw.

The chapel of the Commandery of St. Jan is an aisleless building in a late-Gothic style with Renaissance ornaments. The commandery was built in 1544 as a house of the Knights Hospitallers but was secularised in 1630.

Commanderij van Sint-Jan is een eenbeukig gebouw in een laat-gotische stijl met Renaissance-ornamenten. De commanderij werd in 1544 gebouwd als een huis van de Hospitaalridders maar werd in 1630 geseculariseerd.

The catholic St. Johannes de Doper is a big hall-church in late neo-Gothic style, designed by W. te Riele and built in 1924-1925 on the site of a smaller 19th-century church.

De katholieke St. Johannes de Doper is een grote hallenkerk in late neogotische stijl, ontworpen door W. te Riele en gebouwd in 1924-1925 op de plaats van een kleinere 19e-eeuwse kerk.

Linschoten

 

The reformed Grote of St. Janskerk is an aisleless church in late-Gothic style and was largely built after 1482, the year its predecessor was set on fire. The lower part of the tower probably dates from the 13th century while its upper part is from the 15th century.

De hervormde Grote of St. Janskerk is een eenbeukige kerk in laatgotische stijl en werd grotendeels gebouwd na 1482, het jaar waarin zijn voorganger in brand werd gestoken. Het onderste gedeelte van de toren dateert waarschijnlijk uit de 13e eeuw, terwijl het bovenste gedeelte uit de 15e eeuw stamt.

The Gereformeerde kerk is a small aisleless building in a modest neo-Classical style, built in 1893. In 1966 it was extended with a modern part and in 1979 an entirely new church was built next to the old one which now has a social and cultural purpose.

De Gereformeerde kerk is een kleine zaalkerk in een eenvoudige neoclassicistische en werd gebouwd in 1893. In 1966 vond een uitbreiding plaats met een modern gedeelte en in 1979 werd een geheel nieuwe kerk gebouwd naast de oude, die nu een sociale en culturele functie heeft.
