Giessenlanden municipality (ZH)

Municipality in the Alblasserwaard region, consisting of the villages Hoornaar (administrative centre), Arkel, Giessenburg, Giessen-Oudekerk, Hoogblokland, Noordeloos and Schelluinen. Likes the rest of the region, the municipality is mostly protestant, and all old churches are reformed.

The reformed church of Hoornaar is essentially a 15th-century Gothic church, but it has a 16th-century tower in rare Renaissance style.

Giessen-Oudkerk

 

 

 

The reformed church of Giessen-Oudkerk dates from the second half of the 14th century. Unusual for this region is its 15th-century tower which is in Campine Gothic style.

Giessenburg

 

 

 

 

The reformed church of Giessenburg has a tower and a choir from the 15th-century, but the original nave was replaced in 1877 by the current one in a more or less neo-Gothic style.

Noordeloos

 

 

 

 

The reformed church of Noordeloos is made up of parts from several centuries, with a choir and transept-arm from the 15th century, a tower mostly from the 17th and a nave from the 19th.

Schelluinen

 

 

 

 

The reformed church of Schelluinen is a small building in a very protestant neo-Gothic style. It was built in 1900 and replaced a medieval church on the same location.
